NRVRJ Release Paths
New River Valley Regional Jail is the adult regional jail for Wythe County and seven other participating counties, plus the City of Radford. A person booked on a Wythe charge can leave after personal recognizance, an unsecured bond, a secured bond, time served, sentence completion, dismissal, or another court order. A state-responsible prisoner held at the regional jail can also leave on parole or discharge after the Virginia Department of Corrections completes its part of the sentence process. Those events can place the person in the community, sometimes under probation or parole supervision.
Other departures do not mean community release. NRVRJ may transfer a person to a VADOC institution, another jail, a hospital or treatment setting, a federal authority, or another custodian. A detainer is a request or hold from another authority, and a handoff under one keeps custody in place. For that reason, the destination field and movement reason matter as much as the date. The strongest local proof is a completed New River Valley Regional Jail release transaction tied to the correct booking number, supported when useful by a court order or VINE event.
A departure from New River Valley Regional Jail is not always release into the community. Confirm the movement type and receiving agency.
Search NRVRJ Released Inmates
The official NRVRJ inmate gateway links to the jail’s browser-based Inmate Management Lookup. Unlike a current-only roster, the IML has an “Include released inmates” checkbox. Its name search accepts first name, last name, and an optional date of birth. The identifier search accepts a Booking Number, Permanent Number, State ID, County ID, FBI Number, or ICE Number. Results show the inmate name, booking number, permanent ID, date of birth, and Release Date, with the name linking to a detail record.
Use a narrow, booking-specific check. The jail does not publish the released-result retention period, update cadence, or a definition for every release entry. It also does not promise that the public date includes an exact exit time. A no-result is not proof of release. Spelling, an alias, a new booking, a transfer, or a data delay can all change what appears. The gateway keeps the search tied to the regional jail’s own system, which is important because unofficial pages may still use an obsolete “Wythe County Jail” label.
Note: The legacy lookup uses plain HTTP on a separate port, so some browsers may block it even while the official gateway remains available.
Request NRVRJ Release Records
A public lookup result may answer whether a release date was posted, but a records request can answer what happened. New River Valley Regional Jail usually holds its own booking, movement, and completed release transaction. The Wythe County Sheriff may instead hold the arrest, transport, incident, or other record created by that office. A Wythe court holds the bond order, case disposition, sentence, or later order that supplied legal authority. When ownership is unclear, ask the first likely custodian to identify or redirect the request.
Describe an existing record rather than asking the agency to investigate. Supply the booked name, approximate Wythe arrest or booking dates, the booking or permanent number if known, and the Wythe case or agency. Request the completed release date and time, release disposition or movement type, release authority, and the receiving agency or destination if transferred. An adult routine-booking photograph may be requested separately if held and releasable. Virginia FOIA permits lawful redaction and withholding, so the request creates an access process rather than a promise of every field.

That request route is the durable fallback when an old released booking no longer appears online or the displayed release date lacks needed detail.
NRVRJ Records and Contact
The regional jail is in Dublin, Virginia, outside Wythe County. This matters for both travel and records routing. A Wythe arrest may create Sheriff and court records in Wytheville while the booking and physical release transaction sit with NRVRJ in Dublin. Keep the jail booking number and the Wythe court case number together. They identify different records and help each office locate the same custody episode without relying on a common name alone.

Call the main number with the booked name, approximate date, and Wythe connection. Ask which office can confirm a completed community release versus a transfer and which custodian holds the exact release record. Staff may limit what they disclose by phone. The call still helps route a precise request. No official public records-office schedule was verified for NRVRJ, so confirm access arrangements before traveling or sending time-sensitive material.
Note: District 16 Probation and Parole is a supervision office in Wytheville, not a jail and not a source for NRVRJ door time.
NRVRJ Bond Release Records
The jail’s bonding and bail guidance separates personal recognizance, unsecured bond, secured bond, and ineligible-for-bail outcomes. Recognizance permits release based on a promise to return. An unsecured bond sets an amount that may become due if conditions are broken, while a secured bond requires approved security before release. These are pretrial paths. They do not mean the charge was dismissed or that the court reached a final outcome.
Once a person has been committed to New River Valley Regional Jail, the facility says only a judge can lower the bond or arrange recognizance. Jail staff cannot recommend a professional bondsman. Even after a bond condition is met, another charge or hold can prevent community release. Compare the court’s bond entry with the correct IML booking and the jail’s completed release transaction. If the court authorizes release but the name remains in custody, ask the jail about processing or another hold instead of assuming an error.
Why Wythe Jail Search Leaves County
Wythe County’s official jail search leads to Pulaski County because the participating local facilities closed when New River Valley Regional Jail began receiving prisoners. Construction started in May 1997 on a 28-acre site. The 140,000-square-foot project cost $28.4 million, and the jail received its first prisoners on April 27, 1999. The jail reports an initial count of 248 after the local facilities closed. This regional model is the reason a current Wythe arrestee can have a Wythe case while the custody record comes from Dublin.
The jail later expanded. Work completed in February 2010 brought the published figures to 859 rated beds and 1,183 when double-bunked. Those figures describe the facility’s history and scale, not a current inmate count. They also explain why searches should follow the official NRVRJ history and portal rather than pages that imply an operative adult jail remains in Wythe County.
Track NRVRJ Release Transfers
A release-date field must be read with the person’s custody authority. For a state-responsible prisoner, the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator may show a state institution, a local or regional placement under VADOC authority, or a probation and parole district. A prison or jail location means confinement continues. A district-office result can show community supervision after confinement. If the person has completed both custody and supervision, the current-only locator may not preserve the history, so an inactive VADOC record or final release document is the better route.
NRVRJ also reports that it houses some federal and outside-jurisdiction prisoners. A federal pretrial detainee may be held for the U.S. Marshals Service and not yet appear in the Bureau of Prisons locator. Likewise, the IML’s ICE Number field is only a search identifier. It does not prove that ICE held the person or that the jail has an ICE contract. Ask for the receiving authority. Then follow that authority’s system. This prevents a local custody departure from being mislabeled as release home.

Note: A VINE transfer event and a VINE release event have different meanings; confirm either event with the agency that supplied it.
NRVRJ Release-Day Limits
NRVRJ lists voluntary Alcoholics Anonymous, anger management, GED, substance-abuse, workforce-readiness, and religious programs for people in custody. These offerings may help during confinement, but the jail does not describe them as a promise of post-release case management. Its Life Choices Initiative serves seventh-grade visitors and is expressly not a traditional “scared straight” program. It is not a reentry service and should not be used to infer what help a released adult receives.
The jail’s public property instructions cover preapproved incoming items on weekdays during stated daytime hours, excluding holidays. They do not publish a complete release-day property-return process, exit location, family waiting area, or transportation plan. Anyone arranging a pickup should call 540-643-2000 before relying on an assumed gate or time. The release record proves the custody event. It does not by itself describe transport, returned property, or where a person chose to go after a true community release.
